Submitted by noneck on 27 February, 2007 - 07:55
My good friends from POOLAID are having a "We are the Pool" video release party tomorrow night at Union Pool. After spending the summer enlightening the masses and informing people how tax dollars are pooly spent, POOLAID has teamed up with Brooklyn-based indy bands, including Nada Surf, The Giraffes and others, to make an homage/spoof of We Are the World for the Poolaid.org campaign.

Submitted by noneck on 16 February, 2007 - 00:47
after deleteating all of my music from my macbook and only keeping my podcasts, i have become enamored of aquarium drunkard's podcast. ok, so the music quality isn't the highest all the time, but frankly i don't care. he's got great diversity, lovely themes, and posts daily on great music. keep up the good work!

this saturday, my friends, anorak are reuniting with weird owl, and to boot, two new bands will join them: ways and NYMPH. while i can't verify the awesome rockness of the new addition, one thing is certain: weird owl and anorak do not putt around with cheap imitations of rock and rollers! this weekend's show will be in the belly of glasslands gallery, the former home of oscar the grouch.

art work by
making a video with tigers & monkeys
Submitted by noneck on 15 January, 2007 - 00:05

today, my buddy, matt kohn, invited me down the street to my favorite motorcycle shop, works engineering. it's been 12 years since his last foray into music videos, but when tigers and monkeys called, there was not a snoball's chance in hell he would not bust out his camera.
if you get a chance, take a peak at tigers and monkeys. there's nothing better than a woman who knows how to control a room full of hipster men at the drop of a pbr!
btw, it's cold in that shop! if you do business with works, give them a nice fat tip. being in that shop reminded me of the countless hours working on scooters in boston. how i won't forget the sub-zero hours spent rebuilding my engine in EP's cinder bloc garage, just days before the vegas rally.
The Upgrade! comes to Brooklyn
Submitted by noneck on 12 September, 2006 - 13:27

My good friends at Not An Alternative will be hosting this month's Upgrade. Normally hosted at eyebeam and in a similar vein to DorkBot, The Upgrade is a monthly gathering concerning art, technology and culture. This month Eyebeam, GlowLab, and Not An Alternative are hosting Catherine D'Ignazio a.k.a. kanarinka to discuss several collaborative projects from her practice. Kanarink will be showing examples of contemporary psychogeographic investigations and then open the forum for others to do the same. This event will focus on three questions:
- Is locative media/psychogeography work just entertainment for white, middle-class, gadget-oriented consumers?
- What is at stake in the corporatization and militarization of "play" and "participation"?
- What kind of agency do these projects have? i.e. What do they really do?
This event is part of the 5 day CONFLUX bonanza ( 14 - 17 September). If you miss this event, be sure to check out the non-stop action that is spread far and wide across this great city!

The fight for McCarren Pool & The Billyberg Short Film Festival
Submitted by noneck on 28 June, 2006 - 10:53
This is a copy of my posting for OnNYTurf.com
If you thought Clear Channel/Live Nation has taken complete control over McCarren Pool - think again! The pool's future is still open for discussion. This Friday the pool will host the rescheduled Billyburg Short Film Festival (BSFF).
The 3rd Annual BSFF promises a rockin evening with comedian/filmmaker Mike Showalter, japanther and 6 shorts that will stimulate your retinas. This year's best in show - Baby Eat Baby promises a 10 min journey into a surreal world about war and truth, and Fiim Threat.com says "represents dangerous filmmaking at its very, very best."
Event Details on Upcoming.org or Official BSFF Site
Let's also not forget the unique opportunity to explore one of New York's last remaining New Deal Public Park structures. As I said, the fight for using McCarren pool for community events is not over. While Clear Channel/Live Nation have deposited their equipment and stage in the pool, community organizations like Jelly NYC and Pool Aid are still fighting.
On July 10 at Union Pool, Pool Aid will host an organizing party for their summer long events. For more information email beka at beka(at)notanalternative(dot)net.
